One of the biggest surprises on our last Royal Caribbean cruise wasn’t a new show or restaurant. It was seeing “Express Boarding” appear on all four of our boarding passes the day before we sailed.
When we arrived at Terminal A in Miami, we walked into a dedicated Express Boarding entrance, went through security before the regular lines even opened, and were onboard incredibly quickly.

Express Boarding is an expedited embarkation process offered to some Royal Caribbean guests.
Instead of waiting in the standard security lines, qualifying guests may use a dedicated Express Boarding entrance and move through security more quickly.
Think of it like TSA PreCheck at the airport. You still go through security, but the process can be much faster.
How We Got Express Boarding
Before our cruise from Miami, I had already completed online check-in.
A few days before sailing, my husband found an article from Royal Caribbean Blog explaining that guests may improve their chances of receiving Express Boarding by completing check-in in the Royal Caribbean app and scanning their passports instead of simply typing in their passport information.
I went back into the app and scanned everyone’s passports.
The day before our cruise, all four of our boarding passes turned purple: having changed to Express Boarding.
Was uploading our passport photos the reason?
I can’t say for certain because Royal Caribbean hasn’t officially explained exactly how guests qualify.
However, it’s something I’ll continue doing on future cruises.
What Express Boarding Was Like
When we arrived at Royal Caribbean’s Terminal A in Miami, we immediately noticed a dedicated Express Boarding entrance.
Instead of waiting for the general security lines to open, we were directed into the Express Boarding line and through security almost immediately.
The slowest part of our morning wasn’t security at all. It was having a minor travel consent form reviewed because we were traveling with one of our son’s friends.
Overall, the experience was extremely smooth.

However, Express Boarding has been widely reported by guests sailing from Terminal A in Miami, and Royal Caribbean Blog reports that the feature has been available at many U.S. cruise terminals.
Availability may vary depending on the port, terminal, ship, and your sailing.
Does Express Boarding Guarantee You’ll Board First?
No.
Express Boarding simply helps eligible guests move through security and check-in more efficiently.
Once onboarding begins, Royal Caribbean still follows its normal boarding procedures.
Tips That May Improve Your Chances
While there are no guarantees, these steps appear to help:
- Complete online check-in as soon as it opens.
- Use the Royal Caribbean app rather than only checking in on the website.
- Scan or upload photos of your passport instead of manually entering your passport number.
- Complete all requested information in the app.

Again, Royal Caribbean has never confirmed these steps guarantee Express Boarding.

Absolutely.
For us, it made embarkation feel incredibly easy.
Instead of standing in long security lines, we moved through check-in quickly and were among the first guests entering the terminal.
