If you’re packing for a Royal Caribbean cruise and wondering what you’re actually allowed to wear, you are not alone.

Cruise clothing questions come up constantly:

  • Can I wear shorts to dinner?
  • Do I need fancy clothes?
  • Are sandals allowed?
  • What do people wear to specialty restaurants?
  • Are theme nights mandatory?
  • Do I need heels?
  • Will I be turned away from the Main Dining Room?

Here’s the real answer: Royal Caribbean has suggested attire, but the actual experience onboard is usually much more relaxed than what people argue about online.

You do not need to buy a whole new wardrobe for your cruise. But if you enjoy dressing up, a cruise is also a great excuse to wear things you may not normally wear at home.

The key is packing for the cruise you actually want to have.

Why Royal Caribbean’s Dress Code Feels Confusing

Royal Caribbean’s dress code can feel confusing because the app and the website do not always present it the same way.

In the app, some Main Dining Room listings may say:

“No flip-flops, sandals or shorts allowed during the evening dining hours.”

That sounds strict.

But Royal Caribbean’s website FAQ frames the dress code as “suggested attire” and describes categories like casual, smart casual, formal, and Dress Your Best. The website also separately lists the clearer restrictions for dining venues, including no bare feet and no tank tops in the Main Dining Room or specialty dining venues for dinner.

That difference is why people get confused.

The app can make it sound like shorts and sandals are a hard rule. The website presents attire more as guidance. And in real life onboard, guests wear shorts, sandals, sleeveless tops, casual dresses, polos, Crocs, and resort casual clothes to dinner all the time.

The practical rule I would use is this: Do not show up barefoot, in swimwear, or looking like you just came directly from the pool. Everything else is much more relaxed than people online make it sound.

Do You Have to Dress Up on Royal Caribbean?

No. You do not have to dress up on Royal Caribbean unless you want to.

Royal Caribbean gives suggested attire for different nights, including casual, smart casual, formal, Dress Your Best, and theme nights. But suggested attire is not the same thing as a strictly enforced dress code.

You’ll see a wide range of outfits onboard.

Some people wear gowns, cocktail dresses, suits, jackets, and dress shoes. Others wear sundresses, polos, linen pants, nice shorts, sandals, casual dresses, or comfortable vacation clothes.

It is also very normal to see people at the same dinner table dressed completely differently. One person may be dressed up for photos while someone else is in shorts and sandals.

That does not mean either person is doing the cruise wrong.

What Is Actually Not Allowed in the Dining Room?

The clearest restrictions Royal Caribbean lists are:

  • No bare feet
  • No swimwear
  • No tank tops in the Main Dining Room or specialty dining venues at dinner

That said, onboard reality is more nuanced than the wording makes it sound. Women regularly wear sleeveless dresses, sleeveless blouses, and dressy vacation tops to dinner. The issue is usually not bare shoulders. The issue is looking like you came straight from the pool or wearing an athletic-style tank top as dinner attire.

Use common sense: a sundress is not swimwear, and a dressy sleeveless top is not the same thing as a beach tank.

Can You Wear Shorts to the Main Dining Room?

Yes, people wear shorts to the Main Dining Room on Royal Caribbean.

This is one of the biggest debates in cruise groups. Some cruisers point to the app and say shorts are not allowed. Others point to the website and say the attire is suggested. Then people who have actually cruised recently will tell you they saw shorts in the dining room every night.

In real life, shorts are common, especially on shorter sailings, warm-weather itineraries, and casual nights.

If you want to feel a little more put together, bring one pair of nicer shorts. These can work well for dinner, Dress Your Best if that’s your comfort level, and even some specialty restaurants.

For kids and teens, I would not overthink this. If your teenager comes to dinner with the family in clean athletic shorts or nice shorts, that is usually a win.

Can You Wear Sandals or Flip-Flops to Dinner?

Yes, you will see plenty of sandals at dinner.

The app may say no sandals or flip-flops during evening dining hours, but that does not match what guests regularly experience onboard. Sandals are extremely common on a cruise ship.

There is a difference between dressy flat sandals, casual sandals, pool flip-flops, and walking in barefoot. Bare feet are the real problem. Swimwear is the real problem.

If you are worried, choose flat sandals, dressy sandals, wedges, loafers, or casual shoes that look intentional.

But no, you do not need painful dress shoes just to eat dinner.

Can Women Wear Tank Tops or Sleeveless Dresses?

This is where wording matters.

Royal Caribbean’s website says tank tops are not permitted in the Main Dining Room or specialty dining venues for dinner.

But in real life, women commonly wear sleeveless dresses, sleeveless blouses, dressy camisoles, and vacation-style tops to dinner. A sleeveless cocktail dress or a dressy blouse is not usually treated the same way as a pool tank top or athletic tank.

For men, I would avoid athletic-style tank tops in the Main Dining Room or specialty restaurants at dinner. A T-shirt, polo, linen shirt, or short-sleeved button-down is an easy alternative.

The practical rule: avoid looking like you just walked in from the pool. A dressy sleeveless outfit is usually very different from a pool tank top.

What Should You Wear to the Main Dining Room?

For the Main Dining Room, think vacation dinner clothes.

Good options include:

  • Sundresses
  • Casual dresses
  • Rompers
  • Jumpsuits
  • Linen pants
  • Flowy pants
  • Skirts
  • Blouses
  • Nice tops
  • Polos
  • Button-down shirts
  • Khakis
  • Nice shorts
  • Sandals
  • Flats
  • Loafers
  • Clean sneakers, depending on your outfit

You do not need to dress like you’re going to a wedding unless that is what you enjoy.

A practical packing approach is to bring a few dinner outfits that can be mixed and matched. You can repeat pieces. Nobody is keeping track.

What Should You Wear to Specialty Restaurants?

Specialty restaurants like Chops, Giovanni’s, Hooked, Izumi, 150 Central Park, and others tend to feel a little dressier than the buffet or casual venues.

But they are still not formal for most guests.

Royal Caribbean describes specialty dining as a more upscale dining experience, with smart casual or formal dress suggested on select nights.

You may see people wearing:

  • Dresses
  • Jumpsuits
  • Matching sets
  • Linen pants
  • Blouses
  • Nice tops
  • Polos
  • Button-down shirts
  • Khakis
  • Nice shorts
  • Sandals
  • Flats
  • Loafers
  • Casual dress shoes

You do not need a gown, heels, suit, or dress shoes unless you want to wear them.

If you enjoy dressing up, specialty dining is a good place to do it. If you prefer resort casual, that will usually fit in too.

What About Chef’s Table?

Chef’s Table is the exception I would treat more seriously.

Royal Caribbean’s FAQ says Chef’s Table enforces a formal dress code policy.

If you book Chef’s Table, I would plan a nicer outfit. That does not necessarily mean you need to overpack, but I would not treat it the same as casual Main Dining Room dinner.

What Is Dress Your Best Night?

Dress Your Best is Royal Caribbean’s modern version of formal night.

But the name matters. It is not called “mandatory formal night.” It is called Dress Your Best.

Royal describes Dress Your Best as a night out in your best black-tie look, with suits, ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, and evening gowns listed as acceptable options. Royal also says the number of Dress Your Best nights depends on the length of the sailing and is at the ship’s discretion.

That does not mean everyone onboard will dress formally.

You may see gowns, sequins, suits, sports coats, cocktail dresses, little black dresses, linen outfits, button-down shirts, polos, jeans, and nice shorts.

You may see one person in a long sequin gown standing next to someone in a simple dress and someone else in resort casual clothes.

That is normal.

Dress Your Best night is a great opportunity for professional photos if you want them. But if dressing up does not sound fun to you, you can skip it.

Royal Caribbean’s own FAQ says guests are welcome in the Main Dining Room on formal night if they are wearing smart casual attire.

How Many Dress Your Best Nights Will My Cruise Have?

Royal says the number of Dress Your Best nights is at the ship’s discretion and can vary by itinerary.

As a general guide:

  • 5-night cruises: one Dress Your Best night
  • 6 to 10-night cruises: two Dress Your Best nights
  • 11 to 14-night cruises: three Dress Your Best nights
  • 15-night or longer cruises: three to four Dress Your Best nights

Shorter 3- and 4-night cruises may still have Dress Your Best listed, but it can vary by ship and itinerary.

Always check your app for your actual sailing.

Are Theme Nights Mandatory?

No. Theme nights are optional.

You do not have to wear white on White Night. You do not have to wear tropical clothes on Caribbean Night. You do not have to dress for 70s, 80s, or 90s night.

Theme nights are usually outfit suggestions tied to dinner and photos. Sometimes they also connect to a party, music event, or activity later in the evening, but not always.

The cruise line is not going to turn you away from dinner because you did not follow the theme.

Are Theme Night Outfits for Dinner or After Dinner?

Usually both, if you want.

People often wear theme-night outfits:

  • To dinner
  • While taking photos before dinner
  • While walking around the ship
  • To evening music or party events
  • To the promenade or bars after dinner

But again, it is optional.

If the theme is White Night, you may see people wearing white to dinner and then continuing on to evening activities. If the theme is Caribbean Night, you may see tropical shirts, floral dresses, bright colors, or resort-style outfits at dinner and around the ship.

Sometimes the theme matches an actual event. For example, on some sailings, Toga Night may line up with a Silent Toga Party. But even then, participation is usually casual. On one Utopia sailing, the activities staff helped create togas from sheets for people who did not bring their own, and the sheets were returned afterward.

That tells you everything you need to know: Royal Caribbean is not assuming everyone packed a costume.

When Do Theme Nights Show Up in the Royal Caribbean App?

Theme nights often show up in the Royal Caribbean app a few weeks before sailing, but the exact timing varies.

Royal Caribbean’s theme night guide says finalized itineraries happen within a few weeks of sailing and recommends checking the app regularly for theme night information, activities, shore excursions, and popular shows.

Sometimes theme nights may appear around 30 days before the cruise. Sometimes they appear closer to sailing. For one of our cruises, the theme nights became official 11 days before sailing.

If you check early and do not see them, that does not necessarily mean your cruise will not have theme nights. It may just mean Royal has not loaded them yet.

How to Find Theme Nights in the Royal Caribbean App

To find theme nights in the app:

  1. Open the Royal Caribbean app.
  2. Make sure your upcoming sailing is selected.
  3. Go to Daily Planner.
  4. Check each day around the 5:00 PM time slot.
  5. Look for wording like “Dress Code,” “Tonight’s Attire,” “Dress Your Best,” “White Attire,” “Caribbean Night,” or another theme.

Royal Caribbean has also stated in a pre-boarding guide that theme nights can be found in the Daily Planner section of the app by scrolling to “Tonight’s Attire” for each evening of the cruise.

These listings may have an “Add to Calendar” button, but that does not mean you are making a reservation. It is simply a way to save the reminder to your planner.

What If Your Theme Nights Are Not Showing Yet?

If your theme nights are not showing yet, keep checking.

You can also look at another sailing on the same ship with the same number of nights to get a rough idea of what your cruise might have.

This is not guaranteed, but it can help you plan. For example, if another four-night sailing on the same ship has Dress Your Best, White Night, and Caribbean Night, your sailing may be similar.

Just do not pack something bulky or highly specific based only on another sailing. Themes can change.

Common Royal Caribbean Theme Nights

Common Royal Caribbean theme nights may include:

  • Resort Casual
  • Dress Your Best
  • White Night or White Attire
  • Caribbean Night
  • Tropical Night
  • 70s, 80s, or 90s night
  • Bring the Beat Back
  • Toga Night
  • Latin Night
  • Country or Western theme, depending on sailing

Not every ship or itinerary will have all of these.

Shorter cruises may have fewer themes. Longer cruises may have Dress Your Best more than once.

What Should You Pack for Theme Nights?

My rule is simple: only pack for theme nights if the items overlap with things you would wear anyway.

For White Night, this is easy. White pants, a white dress, a white top, or a white shirt already feel vacation-appropriate.

For Caribbean Night, think tropical prints, floral shirts, bright colors, breezy dresses, linen, or resort casual outfits.

For Dress Your Best, bring one outfit that makes you feel good. That might be a dress, jumpsuit, slacks and a blouse, a button-down shirt, a polo, or a full formal look if that is your style.

For 70s, 80s, or 90s night, you do not need a full costume. A fun accessory, bright colors, a retro top, or something playful is enough.

For Western night, be careful. If you genuinely want to bring cowboy boots, bring them. But do not pack bulky boots only because you think everyone else will be dressed for the theme. Participation is usually much lower than people expect.

Do Most People Participate in Theme Nights?

Some people do. Many do not.

You may see a small percentage of people really dressed for the theme, especially near photo areas. You may also see plenty of people wearing regular dinner clothes.

That is why I would not overpack for theme nights unless dressing up is genuinely part of the fun for you.

Some families love coordinating outfits for photos. Some couples use it as a date-night excuse. Some people love the tradition of cruising and want the dressed-up experience.

Other people want nothing to do with theme nights and simply wear what they packed.

Both approaches are normal.

Why Theme Nights Exist

Theme nights add energy to the evening, give people something fun to do, and create photo opportunities.

That last part matters. The ship photographers are often set up around the ship on these nights, and many families use theme nights or Dress Your Best night as an easy time to get professional photos taken before or after dinner.

If you want pictures, it can be worth packing one or two outfits you feel good in.

If you do not care about photos, theme nights may not matter much to you.

What Shoes Should You Pack for Dinner?

Pack shoes you can actually walk in.

Cruise ships are big. You may walk from your cabin to dinner, then to photos, then to a show, then to a bar, then back to your cabin.

I personally wear flat sandals to dinner now. I do not do uncomfortable dress shoes anymore.

Good dinner shoe options include:

  • Flat sandals
  • Dressy sandals
  • Comfortable wedges
  • Ballet flats
  • Loafers
  • Casual dress shoes
  • Clean sneakers, depending on outfit and comfort
  • Low block heels if you know you can walk in them

You do not need heels unless you want to wear them.

Should You Bring Heels?

Only if you truly enjoy wearing them.

If you want heels for photos, wear them for pictures and dinner, then go back to your cabin and change before the show or evening activities.

There is no prize for suffering through the rest of the night in shoes that hurt.

People are not looking at your feet as much as you think they are.

What Should Kids and Teens Wear to Dinner?

For kids and teens, keep it practical.

Nice shorts, polos, casual dresses, skirts, clean T-shirts, sandals, and sneakers are common. Teens especially may not want to dress up every night, and forcing the issue can make dinner more stressful than it needs to be.

If your teen shows up to dinner with the family, that is the win.

For Dress Your Best night, you can bring one nicer outfit if they are willing. But it does not need to be formal.

Do You Need Different Outfits for Every Night?

No. You can repeat pieces. You can mix and match. You can wear the same shoes multiple nights. You can keep dinner outfits simple.

A smart packing approach is:

  • A few casual dinner outfits
  • One outfit you like for photos or Dress Your Best
  • One white or tropical piece if you want to participate in theme nights
  • Comfortable shoes
  • A light layer because dining rooms and theaters can feel cool

You do not need a separate specialty outfit for every single evening.

What I Would Pack for a Royal Caribbean Cruise

For a short Royal Caribbean cruise, I would pack:

  • Resort casual outfits for most dinners
  • One Dress Your Best outfit if I wanted photos
  • One white piece if White Night is likely
  • One tropical or bright outfit for Caribbean Night
  • Flat sandals for dinner
  • Comfortable walking shoes for daytime
  • A light sweater, cardigan, or wrap for cold venues

If you love dressing up, pack more. If you do not, pack less.

The best cruise wardrobe is the one that lets you enjoy your trip without overthinking every night.

Bottom Line

You do not need fancy clothes for a Royal Caribbean cruise unless you want to bring them.

The Main Dining Room is more relaxed than people online often make it sound. Specialty restaurants may feel a little dressier, but they are not formal unless you are doing something like Chef’s Table. Theme nights and Dress Your Best night are optional. Shoes should be comfortable enough to actually enjoy your evening.

If dressing up makes your cruise feel special, do it. If staying casual helps you relax, do that.

Pack for your vacation, not someone else’s opinion of what cruising is supposed to look like.
