Hotels love to send reminders through their apps or by email: “Check in now and skip the line!” It sounds convenient, but I rarely, if ever, check in online. Here’s why I prefer to stop by the front desk, and why you might want to consider it too.

1. Flexibility With Room Readiness

If you arrive early and your assigned room isn’t ready, checking in online can lock you into that specific room. By waiting and checking in at the desk, you can often be reassigned to a room that’s already available, saving you the frustration of sitting in the lobby.


2. Chance at a Better Room

Sometimes, if the room you were supposed to get isn’t ready, the hotel will move you to a nicer room that is ready. On a stay earlier in the year at Westin Cincinnati our room type wasn’t ready and we were upgraded to a spacious corner room with a great view of Fountain Square. This has happened to me more than once, and it’s an easy way to score a free upgrade.


3. Front Desk Perks

When you bypass the desk, you also miss out on extras that hotels hand out in person. Think free snacks, bottled water, or even drink tickets. At the Hampton Inn Miami Brickell, for example, my husband did the online check-in, but when I stopped at the desk to get a physical key, they handed me complimentary drink tickets and waters.


4. Unlocking Upgrades and Status Benefits

If you have hotel loyalty status, front desk staff usually have the ability to bump you to a better room or a higher floor at no extra charge. On our first stay at Conrad Orlando we booked a standard garden room on Hilton Honors points and, as Hilton Diamond members, we were upgraded to a 2-queen lagoon view room, which was beautiful. On our second trip to Conrad Orlando our upgrade was even better, after adding some money to our points. Human interaction is your best chance at securing the upgrade you’ve earned. Online check-in eliminates that opportunity entirely.


5. What’s In It for the Hotel?

So why do hotels push online check-in so aggressively? A few reasons:

  • Efficiency: It reduces front desk lines and staffing needs.
  • Predictability: It locks in room assignments earlier, making it easier to manage housekeeping schedules.
  • Cost savings: Less personal service at the desk means lower overhead.

These benefits help the hotel, but they don’t always benefit you as the traveler.


Bottom Line

For me, the little bit of extra time at the front desk is always worth it. I get flexibility, perks, and the chance at upgrades that online check-in will never offer. Next time you get that “check in now” notification, consider waiting until you arrive—you might be glad you did.
