Cruise internet has a reputation for being slow, expensive, and frustrating — but Royal Caribbean’s VOOM Internet is different. It’s billed as the fastest internet at sea, and it’s the only way to get full online access onboard.

For my family, VOOM isn’t just a convenience. It’s part of how we relax and stay connected. On our upcoming cruise, I booked 1 person / 4 devices for $172, and here’s exactly how (and why) I did it.

Why We Will Always Book VOOM

Some people like to completely unplug on a cruise — and if that’s you, that’s great!

But for us, technology is part of the way we relax. VOOM lets us:

  • Stay in touch with our teenager onboard via messaging apps
  • Connect with family at home without relying on expensive cell roaming
  • Check in with work (only when necessary!)
  • Stream music or shows in downtime
  • Share photos and updates in real time

I’ve tried just relying on the free Royal Caribbean app (which works for daily schedules and reservations) — but it’s not enough if you want true internet access.

How to Save Money on VOOM Internet

If you’ve ever seen VOOM prices onboard, you know they can add up fast. Here are my tried-and-true ways to pay less:

1. Book Early in the Cruise Planner

Royal Caribbean often sells VOOM in the Cruise Planner at 10–20% off the onboard price.

  • Prices change, so the earlier you grab a good rate, the better.
  • Watch for holiday sales or promotions — these often include internet discounts.

2. Watch for Price Drops and Rebook

If you’ve prepaid for VOOM and see a lower price later:

  • Cancel your current package in the Cruise Planner
  • Rebook at the lower price
  • The refund for the difference goes back to your original form of payment

This trick alone has saved us $40+ on past cruises.

3. Buy One Plan for Multiple Devices

You don’t need to buy a plan for every person in your cabin.

  • Example: I bought 1 person / 4 devices for $172
  • You can log out on one device and log in on another — great for couples or families who don’t need to be online at the same time
  • For us, it’s a perfect balance: my husband can check email in the morning, my teen can hop online after lunch, and I can upload videos at night

Bonus Tip: VOOM Works on Perfect Day at CocoCay

If your itinerary includes Perfect Day at CocoCay, you can stay connected on the island at no extra cost with your VOOM plan. It’s a great way to share those water park photos in real time.

When to Skip VOOM

Even though I’m a fan, there are times you might want to pass:

  • If you truly want to unplug and enjoy a full digital detox
  • If you only need to use the Royal Caribbean app for daily schedules and messaging between guests (free on ship Wi-Fi)
  • If your itinerary is port-heavy and you can get online onshore

Bottom Line

VOOM Internet is worth it for us because it keeps us connected on our own terms — to family onboard, loved ones back home, and the rest of the world when we want it.

By booking early, watching for price drops, and sharing a multi-device plan, you can get the convenience without the sticker shock.
