Here are 15 things I wish everyone knew before their first cruise. And if you’re cruising soon, you’ll want to hear these.
You don’t need a passport for most U.S. cruises, but they make things so much easier. If you have the time to order one and are interested, they’re worth the investment. (See more at Royal Caribbean Travel Documents Checklist)
The price you see on the website doesn’t include everything. You could have port taxes and fees, gratuities, drink packages, and excursions to figure in the true cost of your cruise. (See more at Hidden Cruise Costs No One Talks About (and How to Avoid Bill Shock at Checkout)
Some ships let you board early if you check in online right when it opens. (See more at What Time Should You Arrive at the Cruise Terminal?)
Come into town a day before your cruise so you eliminate potential obstacles AND you can start to relax.
Plan a bag you’ll carry-on the ship with medications, passports, and even your swimsuit. You’ll likely get in your room around 1 & luggage could be delivered after that time. (Read more at 3 Things You Should Never Check on Cruise Embarkation Day)
You’re allowed to bring some drinks and snacks, depending on the cruiseline, if there’s something you just can’t live without. (Read more at Can You Bring Snacks Like Goldfish on a Royal Caribbean Cruise? and How Much Wine or Soda Can You Bring on a Royal Caribbean Cruise?)
Enjoy everything that’s complimentary on your first cruise from the food to activities. Wait until a future cruise to add on specialty dining. I think you should have an appreciation of what’s “free” before truly appreciating the “upgrade”. (Read more at How to Leave a Royal Caribbean Cruise With a Zero Dollar Balance)
You can eat at multiple restaurants in one night. Appetizer in one, dessert in another.
The drink package starts working as soon as you board unless you’re in Texas, even before sail away.
You don’t need to dress up every night. Even “dress your best” night can be what you want it to be.
It’s easy to get turned around on the ship. Do a ship tour after your muster drill on embarkation day. And pay attention to the paintings near the stairs on the way to your room. It helps to make sure you’re in the right spot. (See more at Royal Caribbean Embarkation Day Checklist & Planner)
You’ll miss the moment if you try to do everything. Just enjoy what you’re doing.
Loyalty matters. If you keep cruising with the same company you’ll earn rewards that benefit you in the future.
Check every nook and cranny of that stateroom before you walk out of it for the last time. It’s nearly impossible to get something back if you left it behind.
Book your next cruise onboard and save a bit on a future sailing. As soon as you’re home you’ll be thinking about how soon you can go back. (Read more at How Much Can You Save by Booking Your Next Royal Caribbean Cruise Onboard?)
